Visit the Alexandria Gliderport

Want an interesting place spend an afternoon ?

CISS is the largest soaring operation in Indiana flying 3 club sailplanes in addition to 12 privately owned sailplanes based at the airport. During a typical season members make about 1000 sailplane flights from Alexandria Airport . On a typical day, there will be over 20 pilots towed into the air for flights ranging from a few minutes to over 5 hours, some covering distances of over 100 miles.  Bring your smartphone or   Camera and join the fun.

Club members will be happy to show you the gliders, answer any questions and have you join them to watch the activities. Visitors are always welcome.

If you decide you want to experience the joy of soaring introductory sailplane flights and lessons are available.;

Gift Certificates are also available at the airproort or by mail order using the Gift Certificate Order Form.

Learn to Fly Gliders ?

CISS has an excellent training program with 4 club instructors. Instruction is available for private, commercial and flight instructor glider ratings.

For someone without prior flight training, it typically takes approximately 50 flights to earn an FAA Private Pilot glider certificate. This can be accomplished in a single season for someone who is flying frequently which is the most efficient way to accomplish it, Other students may take longer depending on their personal desires. One of our instructors will be happy to discuss the steps involved and answer any questions.

For airplane pilots it is possible to add-on a glider rating with approximately 20 flights for a private pilot or approximately 30 flights for a commercial pilot.

The CISS instructors donate their time at no charge which makes learning to fly or adding a rating a bargain. Adding a glider rating counts as a Flight Review.
