Chris Hall Earns Bronze Badge

On September 21, 2013 Chris Hall successfully completed the requirements for his SAA Bronze Badge. 

This badge has a number of requirements including accuracy landings with a covered altimeter, short field landings, flights in a single place glider, and completion of a comprehensive written test covering cross country flying. It also is one of the requirements of the CISS Operations Manual for flights beyond gliding distance from the airport.

Congratulations Joey Bowen

On August 25 Joey Bowen  made his first solo flight  in 809S. He is pictured below with  his father Tom who is an airplane pilot. His mother Pat has also been a frequent participant with Joey at the airport during his training. Thanks to the whole Bowen family for their support of this major accomplishment. Joey will be 16 next spring and plans to earn his Private Pilot certificate. 

This flight also completed the requirements for his SSA A Badge.

Johnsen earns SSA B Badge

Kevin Johnsen convinced Crew Chief Tim Woenker to let him take a break from crew duty on August 18th and made a duration flight which completed his SSA B Badge requirements. Congratulations Kevin.

Kevin Waldroup Solo

On August 18 Kevin  Waldroup made his first solo flight of almost an hour in 809S. He captured the flight on a Google Earth trace shown in the picture below. 

.Earlier in the week, Kevin passed his Knowledge Test and he plans to have his Private Pilot Glider Certificate by the end of the season.

Welcome Kevin Waldroup New CISS Member

Kevin along with wife Sarah and their son James live in Fishers,near the Noblesville airport. He is a Professional Engineer working as a Transportation Engineer with Butler, Fairman and Seufert, Inc. in Indianapolis and is a former Captain in the US Army who was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sarah is a Registered Nurse and works in the labor and delivery department at IU Health North Hospital in Carmel..

Bob Zitnick Solo

On July 20 Bob Zitnick made his first solo flight in 809S,

.Nate and Bob are shown with their instructor Olaf Tessarzyk following the flight. 

Not to let his dad outdo him, Nate also re-soloed following his layoff for studies at Purdue. 

Now the race is on. CISS will have two new glider pilots in September if the Zitnick's meet their check ride timetable targets.

New Airport/Turnpoint Files Available on World Wide Turnpoint Exchange

The airport/turn point files on the World Wide Turnpoint Exchange for CISS I99 have been updated to include the latest available information. 

There are two sets of data available. One includes all airports within 100 nm of I99 and has approximately 500 airports/turnpoints. The second includes all airports within 50 nm and has approximately 150 airports/turnpoints.
